B4 - Navigating MOUD and Mutual Aid: Evidence-Based Strategies for Clinicians

Presentation Summary: This session explores the intersection of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) and mutual aid groups, providing OTP clinicians with critical insights to improve patient care. Attendees will examine traditional and emerging recovery support models, including barriers faced by MOUD patients in 12-step settings and alternatives such as MARA, SMART Recovery, and All Recovery meetings. The session will address stigma, ethical referrals, and informed consent strategies, equipping OTP providers with practical tools to navigate local mutual aid landscapes. By understanding the evolving recovery ecosystem, clinicians can enhance treatment retention, patient engagement, and long-term recovery outcomes for individuals using MOUD.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Describe the stigma and resistance individuals using MOUD face in traditional mutual aid settings and its impact on treatment retention and recovery outcomes.
  • Analyze the historical and current stances of Narcotics Anonymous on MOUD and evaluate how these perspectives influence ethical clinical referrals and patient engagement in peer support.
  • Identify at least three MOUD-inclusive mutual aid options and demonstrate how to provide informed consent and ethical guidance when referring patients to mutual aid groups.
