A4 - Bringing Treatment to the People - Opening the First Medication Unit in Oregon

Presentation Summary: This workshop will address the application of the newly revised federal rules to provide OTP services to treat opioid use disorders in rural/frontier communities in the Pacific Northwest by establishing medication units. Presenters will explore persistent local barriers they met in trying to expand services under the revised rules and how they handled them, including responding to community resistance and navigation of a waiver process to site programs. They will also review data that highlights the successful implementation of the very first medication unit in Oregon.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Describe how the revised federal rules apply to the establishment of medication units in rural/frontier communities.
  • Describe local barriers in rural/frontier communities to establishing medication units and an approach to handling them,
  • Discuss outcome data that highlights the successful implementation of a medication unit in a rural/frontier community.
