Presentation Summary: This presentation will approach psychopharmacology from a disorder standpoint discussing classes of psychotropic agents, their uses, side effects, and aspects related to their use in individuals with co-occurring disorders. The presentation will use cases to discuss the major classes of psychotropics. It will be an interactive session encouraging attendee participation. Topics will include general principles of psychopharmacology, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and mood disorders. No previous knowledge of psychopharmacology is required.

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
List three important considerations when considering psychotropic medication to treat psychiatric symptoms in individuals with co-occurring disorders
Identify the major classes of psychotropic agents used to treat psychiatric diagnoses and their side effects.
Describe three important counseling objectives when working with patients prescribed psychotropic medications to treat the disorder for each of the psychiatric disorders presented (depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders).
