Presentation Summary: Recent regulatory reforms have increased providers’ clinical discretion to provide methadone take-home doses. This presentation will focus on considerations for providing take-home methadone doses. Findings will be presented from an ongoing study of take-home practices supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, drawing upon clinical and administrative data from BayMark Health Services for over 77,000 patients across 95 OTPs. Variation across OTPs and patient populations over time will be examined, framing a discussion of clinical and practical considerations for take-home methadone.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants will:
Describe the history of federal regulations governing provision of take-home methadone, including their rationale and critique, and recent changes in the methadone take-home regulations.
Describe how provision of take-home medication in Opioid Treatment Programs operated by a large national health system changed during a period of regulatory reform.
Identify key clinical decision considerations for providing take-home methadone.
