Managing Director of Initiatives Addiction Policy Forum Bethesda, Maryland
Presentation Summary: Many individuals with SUDs pass through the justice system without receiving effective treatment while incarcerated, which significantly increases the risk of relapse, overdose, and death post-release. The Justice Community Overdose Innovation Network (JCOIN), a nationwide initiative led by NIDA, is testing innovative strategies that expand treatment, recovery, and overdose prevention services in justice settings. JCOIN research has demonstrated receiving MOUD during incarceration and continuing treatment post-release improves health outcomes, lowers relapse rates, and reduces recidivism. This presentation will explore key findings from JCOIN research, highlighting the effectiveness of MOUD and strategies for expanding access to evidence-based treatment in justice settings.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants will:
Explain the science of substance use disorders, describe the effectiveness of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), and understand their role in reducing cravings, preventing relapse, and supporting recovery in justice-involved populations.
Recognize key barriers to addiction treatment in justice settings, including stigma and policy restrictions, and apply evidence-based strategies such as professional training, policy reforms, and care coordination models to expand MOUD access and improve outcomes.
Translate JCOIN research findings into actionable strategies for improving addiction treatment access in jails, prisons, courts, and community supervision settings, including expanding MOUD programs, enhancing reentry support, and fostering collaboration between justice and healthcare systems.
