F2 - Harm Reduction to Increase Patient Engagement and Retention: A Case Study

Presentation Summary: Integration of harm reduction activities was included in SAMHSA’s release of the updated Final Rule. Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) are a critical service whose reach can be maximized by incorporating harm reduction principles. As overdoses continue, it is imperative upon the treatment community to improve how we engage clients and deliver services, particularly for people with ongoing substance use. While many treatment providers dispense naloxone and other overdose prevention tools, changing how we engage with people with active use is a bigger cultural shift. This session will describe one provider’s journey to change “hearts and minds” to embrace life-saving tools.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Define harm reduction.
  • Identify at least three harm reduction principles.
  • List at least two strategies for implementation of harm reduction approaches in their own practice setting.
