Presentation Summary: This presentation unveils a groundbreaking perspective on addiction treatment, exposing the hidden epidemic of tobacco use among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). With smoking rates reaching up to 95% in some treatment programs, tobacco addiction silently undermines recovery efforts, intensifies health risks, and increases mortality. Discover how nicotine and opioids reinforce one another through shared addiction-related brain pathways, trapping individuals in a deadly cycle. Through cutting-edge research and innovative strategies, we’ll reveal how integrated care models targeting both addictions can revolutionize treatment outcomes, lower relapse rates, and transform recovery journeys.

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Describe the co-occurrence of tobacco use and opioid use disorders (TUD and OUD), and its impact on morbidity and mortality.
  • Interpret that TUD and OUD share neurobiological pathways of addiction, which contributes to the complexity of co-occurring addictions and hinders recovery.
  • List evidence-based integrated care models, identifying strategies and opportunities to incorporate tobacco use treatment into opioid treatment programs (OTPs), to improve patient outcomes, reduce relapse rates, and enhance long-term recovery and well-being.
